Altea, Spain is a small town in the Costa Blanca and is located roughly nine miles north of Benidorm, a popular Costa Blanca city. The length of stay varies, but most visiting writers and painters stay in the area surrounding the old church, Nuestra Senora Del Conseulo. Walking tours are the best way to experience Altea and are available in the town or the surrounding mountains. You can take a private tour or a guided tour of the trails around the village. If you enjoy nature, the mountain walking tours are a great way to enjoy the beautiful surroundings in a tranquil environment.

A short distance from the beach and harbor area is a selection of small stores for shopping. Many stores break for an afternoon siesta from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 or 5:00 p.m., but the stores are generally open from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Larger stores may stay open all day. There is also a craft market open from Easter through September, offering another opportunity for shopping. You can find a wide variety of reasonably priced handmade items for sale at the market. The market is near the harbor area.

Despite its small size, golfers will still be in luck with the Altea Golf Club offering a great course for visitors to the area. The beautiful climate in the area is great for golfing, especially with the comfortable summers and mild winters. Finally, for some nightlife or more popular tourist attractions, you can take a trip to the nearby city of Benidorm where you will find vibrant nightlife, theme parks and water parks. You can travel to Benidorm by car or by train.

If you love thrift stores and garage sales, this is the column for you. There’s gold in them thar hills—sewing gold! Change your perspective a little and look at the world as one big fabric store and you’ll find all kinds of treasures to add to your stash.

– Have a closet full of old bridesmaid or prom dresses? Use them to make a quilt or a patchwork pillow. Give the bride a memento from her wedding by printing her wedding details on a piece of printable fabric. Then, use fabrics, trims, and even petticoat tulle from the bridesmaid dresses (or even the bride’s dress if you have scraps from alterations) to artfully dress a pillow she can keep always. Give your daughter a memento of her high-school dances with a quilt made with fabric from her dresses. Create an appliqué of a dress to put in each square using the fabric from her gowns.

– Handkerchiefs, gloves, scarves, bandanas, lace & linens. When I was a child, we had to have a new embroidered handkerchief and a pair of white gloves every Easter. Sew these mementos into projects to create an artistic memoir. Trims can often be pricey when new, so take them off of old garments or lingerie and re-use them. Make a dress from a vintage pillow case or from a bandana.

– Used Clothing & Thrift Items. Find tablecloths with embroidery or lace to transform—many vintage linens were made with handmade lace. Use old straw hats as forms to create fancy dress-up bonnets. Use old jeans to make trendy handbags. Find old craft or knitting kits and use the threads and yarns to create decorative trims for your projects. Remove the back and insides of an old stuffed fabric doll or toy, and use the front or profile for a cute appliqué on jeans. Silk or lace from wedding gowns can be removed and used for other sewing projects, and the tulle from underskirts can be re-made into pettiskirts. Take a blouse from your closet that you haven’t worn (but can’t bear to give away) and use it to create a camisole or a fabric belt.

– Robes & Terrycloth. Cut worn parts from old robes or towels and sew them together to make a fun shower curtain (use with a liner). Vintage chenille is fun to use for stuffed toys.

– Buttons, Beads & Jewelry. If you have an old jacket with great buttons, consider taking the buttons off to re-use them. Find beaded sweaters or jackets, old jewelry—even shoes– and disassemble to reclaim the beads and findings. Remove belts from cool belt buckles and attach a new fabric belt. Re-use hardware from old purses to make new ones. Frequently, hardware is expensive to buy new but remains undamaged on used pieces.

– Scraps. Be sure to use those scraps of fabric for small projects like appliqué, scrapbooking, patchwork, hair clips, stuffed toys, and embellishments.

You can visit the craft market, near the harbor area. It’s open from Easter through September. You can find unique gift items from local artisans. Most of the items are handmade, and the prices are reasonable.

Some would argue that a vacation is not complete without golf. If that’s the case, you’ll find many courses around the Costa Blanca to please any golfer. It’s a good idea to call ahead, as green fees vary from course to course, and from season to season.

If you like the hustle and bustle of a city brimming with activity, Benidorm is the place for you. It’s the most popular resort area on the Costa Blanca, with over 1000 restaurants. During the day, you can visit its theme parks and at night you can dance the night away at one of its 30 nightclubs.

Recipe: pan pierogi

Pan Pierogi

A family favorite.

5 pounds potatoes*
1 pound Velveeta cheese
1 pound lasagna (12 noodles)
3/4 pounds butter (3 sticks, divided use)
Milk (optional)
1 1/2 pounds onions, chopped

Fry onions in lots of butter. I usually fry 3/4 pound of onions with 1/4 pound (l stick) of butter each in two skillets to prevent over crowding in the pan. Fry slowly until a light golden color and completely cooked.

Peel, cut up and cook potatoes in boiling salted water, drain. Add 1 stick (1/4 pound) butter, milk (if needed) and Velveeta cheese, cut up. Mash until of desired consistency for filling. This step can be prepared the night before and refrigerated until ready to assemble.

Butter a large flat casserole dish or pan. I use a 9 x 15-inch enameled lasagna pan.

Cook lasagna noodles according to package directions. Layer four lasagna noodles in buttered pan. Add half of the potato mixture. (Wet hands and pat on potatoes until real smooth.) Top with 4 more noodles. Add 1/2 of the fried onions. Add the second half of potato mixture. Add the third layer of 4 lasagna noodles. Add the last half of onions to the top of casserole. Bake at 325 degrees F – 350 degrees F for 45 minutes or until completely heated through. Remove from oven. Let stand about 10 minutes before serving. Just like lasagna, it will be soupy to serve if not allowed to stand.

NOTES: Add milk only if mashed potatoes are really stiff. Not usually needed.

*Instant potato flakes may be used with regular potatoes if desired. Also, if potatoes are too loose when mashed, you may add some instant potato flakes to firm it up to desired consistency.

Can be made without onions for people who don’t want onions. Can be frozen. Thaw in refrigerator before reheating. I sometimes make it in two pans. Serve one, freeze the other. Just snip the cooked lasagna with kitchen shears to fit pan. It is a versatile recipe. Comfort food at its best!

Excellent served with buttered carrots and a beet salad.

This casserole is delicious! Rich tasting and filling. Great for pot luck. Makes about 12 servings.

Roasted Potatoes with Lemon, Oregano and Garlic

I made these three nights ago. They were really good, quite different–and certainly better than the vast majority of the roasted potato recipes I have tried in the past. This time around, I followed the recipe directions. However, next time around, I will probably reduce the lemon juice in the recipe by as much as 50%. The Taiwanese lemons I used are very sour, so the lemon flavor in the potatoes was a tad too strong for my daughter son and myself. My wife, however, liked them just as they are. Thanks for a very good, unique recipe!

Author Aglaia Kremezi says these are some of the most delicious roasted potatoes you’ll ever taste, especially if you (like many Greeks at Easter) roast them in the lamb juices.

3 pounds baking potatoes, peeled and cut
into 1 1/2-inch cubes
1/2 cup olive oil
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano, crumbled
1 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup beef or chicken stock
1/3 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 to 3 tablespoons freshly chopped oregano
plus additional for garnish

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Place potatoes in a single layer on 13 x 9-inch baking dish and pour oil over them. Add garlic, oregano and salt and pepper to taste, tossing well to coat. Bake potatoes for 15 minutes.

Add stock, toss and bake 10 minutes more.

Add lemon juice, toss and bake 10 to 15 minutes more, until cooked through.

Sprinkle with fresh oregano and serve at once.

Makes 4 to 6 servings.

You will need wide mouth canning jars, ribbon, potpourri, votive candles with holders, and a hot glue gun. Make your own canning jar candles to add charm to the dinner table as a center piece or gift them to family and friends for gifts.

To start, fill the jar with potpourri. If you desire, add some extras such as dried apples or cinnamon sticks. One of my favorite parts of Easter is when we do the egg decorating. This is always something that was a magical event for me when I was a child. I always loved to watch the little disks of color dissolve in the vinegar and water to form the watery dye, and I loved to decide exactly what colors I wanted to make each and every one of the eggs before me. To eliminate fighting, my mother often split the eggs into two workstations so my brother and I wouldn’t argue over colors or who got to do more eggs than the other.

Today, egg decorating is not just for Easter, though it is the most popular time to do it. You can decorate eggs to go with your décor, though many people like to do this for special occasions only. You can empty the contents of the egg and then add the color or design you want. When you do this, you are ensuring you can keep the egg as long as you can keep it from being broken, because there is nothing inside to rot. Egg decorating can be trickier this way, however, because the egg is not as strong as it would be without a small hole in the bottom.

You can go about egg decorating this type of egg any way you want to. You can use dyes, but you can also use different types of paint that may stand out and make a bolder statement. You may want to just leave them white for whatever reason. It really is up to you. Egg decorating is something that can be as creative as painting a landscape or writing an epic poem if you have the time and energy to really get into it.
